Unpacking NCTCS 2d:
What is NCTCS 2d?
"Teachers adapt their teaching for the benefit of students with special needs. Teachers collaborate with the range of support specialists to help meet the special needs of all students. Through inclusion and other models of effective practice, teachers engage students to ensure that their needs are met."

What does this standard really mean?
This standard really just means that we, as teachers, meet the needs of our students. Whether it be meeting the needs of their individual learning styles, following their IEP or 504 plan, translating their school work into another language, etc., it is our job to meet their needs.
Key Vocab in the standard:

special needs: the special educational requirements of those with learning difficulties, emotional or behavioral problems, or physical disabilities.

inclusion: the act of including; the state of being included.

model: a standard or example for imitation or comparison.

effective: adequate to accomplish a purpose; producing the intended or expected result.

practice: repeated performance or systematic exercise for the purpose of acquiring skill or proficiency

engage: to occupy the attention or efforts of (a person or persons).

ensure: to make sure or certain.
Key Concepts in the standard:

adapting teaching: to "adapt" means to make suitable to requirements or conditions; adjust or modify fittingly.

In this sense, the standard addresses making instruction suitable to the requirements of IEP's and 504's, as well as modifying instruction for other needs as well.

students with special needs: these students have needs that we have to meet! (Look at the "special needs" definition in the Key Vocab section on the left.)

"Teachers collaborate with the range of support specialists": this means that teachers speak with people including but not limited to Special Education teachers, Title I teachers, Instruction Coordinators, Speech Therapists employed by the school, the school nurse, the guidance counselor, and even those working in the cafeteria when it comes to students with dietary restrictions.

meeting needs: to meet the requirements of IEP's and 504 plans, while also simply meeting the needs of the Multiple Intelligences by Howard Gardner.
